Lisa Mansour is an award-winning, third generation expert in cake decoration and the co-founder and the co-owner NY CAKE, the premier destination for baking and decorating supplies in New York City. Mansour is also the head of NY CAKE Academy, a hands-on cake decorating school where she teaches classes on fondant, specialty cakes and seasonal topics for baking enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.
In addition, Mansour has created two industry-leading events that celebrate the art of cake decorating: The New York Cake Show and The Golden Tier Awards. Launched in 2013, The New York Cake Show is the largest annual gathering of culinary artists, cake designers, sugar work masters, chocolatiers and bakers exhibiting mastery of their mediums. The Golden Tier Awards, which launched in 2017, is the first black-tie international awards show of its kind, bringing together accomplished culinary professionals to celebrate the achievements of the best in the dessert world.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Mansour grew up in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn and was surrounded by baking, cake decorating and candy making. Her grandmother, Anne Taylor, was a chocolatier, and her mother, Joan, is one of the pioneers of cake decorating in New York City. Mansour’s passion for cake decorating became apparent in grade school, where she delighted her peers with creative confections for school events, and, in the ensuing years, created a six-tier cake for her high school prom. In 1980, when Joan opened her first shop, The Chocolate Gallery, in the back of her husband’s cosmetic store, Mansour worked there almost every weekend, assisting with the classes her mother taught. Together, in 1989, Mansour and her mother expanded The Chocolate Gallery and it became the first store and school of its kind in the tri-state area to be dedicated solely to the art of cake decorating and candy creation. In 1992, they moved to a bigger storefront, and NY CAKE was born. Today, Mansour and her sister, Jenny Kashanian, manage all aspects of the store with Mansour overseeing the academy and Kashanian running the operations including the wholesale, mail order and website.
BIGGER & BETTER
In April 2018, Mansour and Kashanian announced the move of NY CAKE to a larger space on 118 West 22nd Street in fall 2018. The new location enabled the family to better serve their devoted fan base as a one-stop-shop for the nation’s most comprehensive collection of innovative baking and cake decorating supplies, and as headquarters for engaging instruction on the art of cake decoration. The move allowed Mansour and her sister to expand both the store’s offerings with a new line of baking products and the school schedule to include even more classes from Mansour and visiting instructors. The new location also houses NY CAKE’s first-ever café offering a welcoming space to relax while enjoying freshly-baked confections.
AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
Mansour has been recognized as one of the top professional cake designers in the world, having received wide critical acclaim from national and international media and winning awards and recognition from global competitions and organizations. In 2015, Mansour won Best in Show and First Prize for Pastry Presentation from the lauded Société Culinaire Philanthropique, and in 2017, under her guidance as captain, Team USA placed second at the Cake Designers World Championship in Milan. Mansour is also part of the International Excellence Team of Cake Designers, an honor given by the International Federation of Pastry Ice Cream and Chocolate for her work in the industry and an acknowledgement only 17 other cake designers in the world have achieved. Outside of global competitions, Mansour is a renowned pastry instructor who was inducted into The Wilton Method Instructor Hall of Fame in 2003 and has been invited by the French Culinary Institute to judge students’ final exams, grading each on appearance, design and taste.
